SIGA System (Integrated Health Service Information) CLIENT: São Paulo City Municipal Health Secretariat Enhancing the user service level in the health services sector by improving health management is founded on total data sharing, centralized in a single and integrated base fed by all service units and accessed through the Internet. This is the basis of the program that Atech developed to integrate information from public service units throughout the city of São Paulo, thus creating a system with a single and integrated database. São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and the third largest in the world, with a population of about 14 million people. Currently, about seven million of its residents are enrolled in the National Health System (SUS). In 2003, the city started a huge project aiming at building an integrated web-based system to collect patient information and to provide an integrated patient-scheduling system for medical procedures with any of the city's 700 health care providers. These processes reduce waiting time, organize patient flow, and greatly improve the quality of care by optimizing resources. The Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) was extensively used to build this mission-critical application and to achieve the required level of integration. Using J2EE technologies such as Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), Java Servlet, JavaServer Pages (JSP), Java Message Service (JMS), Java technology Transaction API (Java TTA), and Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS), it was possible to create a robust and high-performance application, with a high level of reuse and flexibility. Taking advantage of the new Java technology annotations facility, a large part of the code was automatically generated, which sped the development and reduced the number of errors.
